Alpari MT5 Walkthrough: Execution, Fees, and What Kenya Should Know

I have traded on MetaTrader 5 for the better part of a decade, and I still open its terminal before I open my broker's proprietary app. There is a reason for that, and it comes down to how the platform is built. Alpari offers MT5 alongside MT4 and its own mobile app, and for a platform geek like me, the mechanics matter more than the marketing. This is a hands-on review of what the Alpari MT5 experience actually looks like, what it costs, and where a Kenyan trader needs to keep their eyes open.

The Platform Itself

MT5 is not MT4 with a new coat of paint. The core architecture is different: a true multi-threaded 64-bit system. On my machine, loading a SPX500 chart with a few custom indicators takes milliseconds, and timeframes switch without the stutter you get on older builds. Depth of market is built in, which matters if you trade ECN accounts where you can actually see the order book.

The order execution model is where MT5 shines. You get market, limit, stop, and stop-limit orders, plus trailing stops. The key difference from MT4 is that pending orders are stored on the server, not on your terminal. If your internet drops, your stop-loss is still alive on Alpari's side. That is a genuine safety feature, not a spec sheet line.

The strategy tester in MT5 uses real tick data, which is a massive upgrade. Backtesting an Expert Advisor on MT4 uses approximated M1 data; MT5 replays actual ticks. If you are running any algorithmic strategy, the results are simply more trustworthy here.

Accounts and Spreads

Alpari's account lineup for Kenya is straightforward, but it has a quirk. The Micro account, from USD 30, is MT4 only. If you want MT5, you are looking at Standard, ECN, or Pro ECN.

AccountMin DepositSpreadCommissionPlatform
MicroUSD 30from 1.5 pipsNoneMT4 only
StandardUSD 100from 0.3 pipsNoneMT4, MT5
ECNUSD 300from 0.1 pipsYes, per lotMT4, MT5
Pro ECNUSD 500from 0.0 pips~USD 2.50/lot sideMT4, MT5

The spread values are the raw numbers, not the "average" figures brokers love to quote. On the Pro ECN, zero spread on majors during London open is real, but you pay the commission. On the Standard account, the spread is wider but there is no commission, which is simpler for position traders who hold for days.

Base currencies are USD, EUR, GBP, and CZK. There is no KES base currency verified for the current operator. For a Kenyan trader, that means every deposit and withdrawal carries a conversion cost. Your USD-denominated profit is converted back to KES at your bank's rate, which can eat a few basis points off your edge. If you are scalping tight spreads, factor that in.

Execution in Practice

Latency is the hidden variable in any MT5 setup. Alpari's servers are not in Nairobi, so your orders travel to their matching engine, wherever that is hosted. In practice, the execution speed on a decent fibre connection is acceptable for swing trading and most intraday work. For high-frequency scalping, the physical distance adds milliseconds you cannot recover.

I tested the ECN account with a One Click Trading setup. The order flow is direct to the interbank market, and slippage on market orders during news events was within reasonable bounds. On the Standard account, which is a market maker model, execution during volatile moments sometimes showed re-quotes. That is the nature of a dealing desk, and it is worth knowing when you choose your account type.

One thing that surprised me in a good way: the depth of market panel on MT5 actually works with Alpari's ECN feed. You can see the top levels of the order book, which is rare for retail brokers. It gives a sense of where liquidity sits before you pull the trigger.

Trading costs and available instruments

Alpari lists over 750 instruments. Forex, metals, indices, commodities, share CFDs, and crypto CFDs. The spread on major pairs is competitive, and the swap rates are published transparently.

FYI
On ECN accounts, the swap rate is applied on Wednesday for triple swap. If you hold positions over the weekend, check the swap values in the spec window before you enter. A 0.0 pip spread means nothing if the overnight cost is unreasonable.

The leverage is the headline number, and it deserves attention. Up to 1:3000 on forex and metals. That is an offshore number, and it cuts both ways. At 1:3000, a 0.03% adverse move against your position wipes out your margin. You can trade a micro lot with a tiny balance, but the risk is asymmetric. The platform gives you the tools to control it, but it does not control it for you.

Regulatory Context for Kenya

Alpari operates for Kenyan clients under Parlance Trading Ltd, licensed in the Comoros Union under MISA licence T2023236. That is offshore Tier-3 regulation. An older CMA Kenya licence belonged to a prior Exinity operator, and it is not verified as current for today's Alpari brand.

Kenya's Capital Markets Authority regulates online forex under the Capital Markets (Online Foreign Exchange Trading) Regulations, 2017. A CMA-licensed broker must have minimum paid-up capital of KES 50 million, segregate client funds, cap leverage around 1:400, and submit to audits. Offshore brokers serving Kenyan residents without a CMA licence operate outside that framework. The CMA maintains a public register at licensees.cma.or.ke, and they issue cautionary statements about unlicensed entities. The regulatory status is a factor to weigh, not a reason to panic, but it is a real difference between this and a locally licensed alternative.

WARNING
Retail forex is legal and regulated in Kenya, but only licensed brokers offer local recourse. Alpari's Comoros MISA licence offers no confirmed Kenyan client protection. Confirm which entity onboards you before depositing.

Funding and Withdrawals

The practical logistics of moving money in and out matter more than any platform feature. Alpari does not offer local KES mobile-money rails. The review found no M-Pesa or Airtel Money integration for the current operator. Funding options are cards, wire transfer, FasaPay, Volet, and crypto (BTC/ETH). Minimum deposit is USD 30 on the Micro account.

Kenya is mobile-money-first. For a local trader, using M-Pesa is the default expectation. Many brokers active in Kenya denominate accounts in KES and offer instant zero-fee deposits via M-Pesa. Alpari does not, at this review. You will fund in USD, pay a conversion on the way in, and another on the way out.

Bank WireYes1-3 daysBank rate
Cards (Visa/MC)YesInstantCard rate
FasaPay / VoletYesInstantPlatform fee
Crypto (BTC/ETH)YesMinutesNetwork fee

Capital controls are not the issue here. Kenya repealed exchange-control laws in 1993 and runs a market-determined float. No hard cap prevents funding a foreign broker, though FX purchases above USD 10,000 need documentation.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

If you are a beginner with a small account, the 1:3000 leverage is a trap disguised as a feature. A broker under FCA or CySEC regulation will cap you at 1:30, which protects you from catastrophic losses while you learn. If you need swap-free Islamic accounts, Alpari does not verify a dedicated Islamic account at this review. Confirm at signup before you assume it exists.

If your plan is to deposit KES via M-Pesa, fund in local currency, and withdraw to your mobile wallet, Alpari does not fit that workflow. The absence of a KES base currency and mobile money rail makes it a less convenient option than brokers that have built local payment infrastructure.

Questions

Does Alpari MT5 support Expert Advisors?

Yes, MT5 supports Expert Advisors written in MQL5. The strategy tester uses real tick data, which gives more accurate backtesting results than MT4. You can run multiple EAs on different charts simultaneously, and server-side pending orders mean your stops survive disconnects.

What is the minimum deposit to trade on Alpari MT5?

The Micro account starts at USD 30, but it is MT4 only. For an MT5 account, the Standard account requires USD 100. The ECN account requires USD 300, and the Pro ECN requires USD 500. There is no KES base currency, so deposits are made in USD.

Can I deposit with M-Pesa?

No, local KES mobile-money rails are not verified for the current Alpari operator at this review. Funding options are cards, wire transfer, FasaPay, Volet, and crypto. This differs from many brokers active in Kenya that offer instant M-Pesa deposits.
